The visuals in my sketchbook have been generated by taking photographs and drawing from them and first hand. The methods of drawing I have used include continuous line, watercolour, fine liner, layering, oil pastels and masking tape. I have tried to experiment with different techniques and materials that I wouldn’t normally use, as I tend to stick with a pencil. However I feel I could push this further, especially on larger scale drawings. I initially began with quite simple, quick sketches of sign posts, the street floor and the people there. I then began layering my drawings, trying to represent the busy feel of Market Street. Rosie James’s stitched drawings really inspired this as she layers her simple drawings over patterned fabric. I feel this gives each of the people she has drawn a character.
The layout in my sketchbook is my thought process throughout this project. Developing from looking at Market Street as a whole to concentrating on certain aspects. I feel my layout could be improved by more explanation of what I’m thinking on each page, as I don’t feel it is very clear. From looking at signposts, people, tram tickets, the street floor, lights and the street at different times of the day, I feel I jump from one idea to the next.
I feel that the context of my work is not about Market Street itself, but the people who go there. I am more interested by the people than the architecture and surroundings. To link my work back to the brief of Sleuths, spies and lies, I decided to take note of what people were saying whilst passing me on Market Street, picking up hints of their conversations. I feel as though I’m listening to things I shouldn’t be, almost like peoples secrets. This idea really interests me, although I am struggling on how to present this within my work. I feel like it should be something really subtle, or something that you shouldn’t really be looking at.
