Intentions brief

My idea for this concept came from my family, as it usually does. I began by thinking about how we've changed and grown up not only as a family but as individuals. I have chosen to look at our footwear, as a way to represent that as I feel it shows each of us individually through design and size.

My starting point was to look at the soles of our shoes, concentrating on pattern, shapes and looking at our muddy footprints. However, I found most of our shoes were the same and quite simple designs and I wasn't really getting anything from them.

After visiting Florence and going to Pitti Filati Yarn Fair, I was completely inspired. The knit samples, designs and garments I saw there were amazing. One garment in particular I saw made me think of footwear completely differently.

I fell in love with the way these two pieces of knit had been joined together and began to think about shoes and how they are fastened. Thinking about, shoe laces, velcro, buckles, elastic, eyelets and zips this led me a whole new idea.

The two briefs i am working this idea around are Urban Outfitters; creating art for their Manchester store and Bradford Textiles Award creating a small range of  knitted samples to enter into their competition.

In this project I really want to experiment with the techniques I already know, combining them and using un-conventional materials within my samples.
